Guindy National Park History
Back in the 1670s, a garden area was created from the original Guindy forest, and a residence called Guindy Lodge was built by Governor William Langhorne. Later, the land changed hands several times, and the government bought it in 1821. In 1910, part of the area became a Reserve Forest.
In 1958, some of the forest was given to the forest department to make a children’s park and nature center, which was opened on 14 August 1959 by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Finally, in 1978, the remaining area was officially declared Guindy National Park and given protected status.
